FAQs

Q.        Fire Buff. That name is new to me. What is a fire buff?

A.         You have heard of movie buffs, sports buffs, or opera buffs. In short, we are enthusiastic supporters of all aspects of the Fire Service. See our “What is a Fire Buff” page for an historic perspective on the origin of this term. Provide link here.

Q.        I cannot always be available to respond. May I still help when I can?

A.         Absolutely. All our members have busy lives. Our team members respond within the limits allowed by their own and often changing schedules. A minimum of 20 service hours a year is required. These hours can also be met by attending meetings and working on various committees or projects.

Q.        I don’t have a vehicle to carry supplies. May I still help?

A.         Yes. Some of our members meet up with Support 1 at the garage and ride to the scene as part of the Support 1 crew. Other members drive to the fire scene, walk in, and help our team when they arrive.

Q.        I am thinking about a career with the fire service. Will this help me?

A.         This is a fantastic way to see up close what firefighters do. You will learn about equipment, tactics, and the language of firefighting.

Q.        Is being a fire buff dangerous?

A.         Safety is our paramount value. We are not firefighters. We are not emergency responders. We do not operate in the hot zone. Because we work in all kinds of weather, and close to emergency scenes, there are some increased hazards associated with working in slippery, icy, smokey, and ill lit conditions.

Q.        How are you funded?

A.         We rely on donations from individual firefighters. We also have a service contract with the Tacoma Fire Department. We also receive donations from members of the community. Lastly, our members pay dues of $50 per year.

Q.        Why do people join?

A.         People have varied reasons for joining. Some people are looking for a way of saying thank you to our first responders. Others enjoy being part of something bigger than themselves. Many enjoy the comradery that comes with doing important work within a close-knit team.

Q.        Suppose I have other questions.

A.         Simply contact us using the Contact Us button. We’ll get back to you very quickly.

Q.        I am unable to join now. Is there some other way I can help?

A.         Yes. Thank you for asking. We are always in need of donations. Fuel, supplies, and equipment are expensive. If you have the means, please use the Donate button.
